Turkish language publication lauched to help Turkish MPs understand European issues

As part of its partnership project with the Turkish Parliament on European integration and harmonisation, LINKS working with the Turkish Democracy Foundation, recently launched a new monthly publication in Turkish aimed primarily at Turkish MPs and Turkish elected regional officials. Yeni Yıldız (New Star) aims to provide clear and concise information that will help busy Turkish politicians to keep abreast of developments in Turkey’s EU accession negotiations, as well as in the European Union itself.

The editorial board of Yeni Yıldız includes representatives of the European Harmonisation Commission of the Turkish Parliament, LINKS and the Turkish Democracy Foundation. The Chairman of the Editorial Board is former Turkish Foreign Minister and current Chairman of the Parliament’s European Harmonisation Commission, Mr Yasir Yakis MP.

A new web site will soon come on line to compliment the publication and provide further background information on issues raised in the publication.

A spokesperson for LINKS in London said that EU accession is an issue of great interest to the Turkish people and their political representatives. Many are however overwhelmed by the complexity and sheer volume of issues involved in the accession process, which in the case of Turkey is not just simply compliance with the Acquis Communitaire, but involves a variety of other issues such as Cyprus, relations with Armenia and the wider Christian-Islamic dialogue. The new publication will flash out some of the important events and comments in short crispy articles, whilst the supporting web page will allow those who want more detailed information to access it easily.
