Engaging with civil society in Ukraine

LINKS maintains a keen interest in the evolving political climate in Ukraine and is currently intensifying its co-operation with a number of think tanks and non governmental organisations in Ukraine. LINKS recently held two events in Ukraine as part of this work: a round table discussion in Kiev and workshop for young leaders in Cherngiev

On 24 November in Kiev LINKS co-organised a round table discussion with the Ukrainian think tank STRATEGEMA on the theme “Threats, challenges and opportunities in contemporary Ukraine”. Academics, politicians, Diplomats and NGO activists attended the round table meeting at the Leonardo Centre in central Kiev. Juriy Romanenko of the Analytical Centre “Strategema” (www.politics.in.ua) presented a comprehensive paper on current trends in internal Ukrainian politics and foreign policy options, which was followed by a lively discussion. The round table is the first in a series that LINKS and Strategema are organising over the coming months.

Consistent with its policy of working in different regions of Ukraine, the second activity co-hosted by LINKS was held in the city of Chernihiv in Northern Ukraine on 25 - 26 November. This event was held in co-operation with the Ukrainian Falcons organisation, an affiliate of the International Falcon Movement, and was a seminar for young activists on increasing political awareness amongst Ukrainian youth. Around thirty young activists discussed the current state of political and international awareness amongst Ukrainian youth and the best ways to motivate this interest. Participants came from different regions of Ukraine and discussion reflected current debates in Ukrainian society.
