Secretariat of South Caucasus Parliamentary Initiative concludes meeting in Yerevan

The Secretariat of the South Caucasus Parliamentary Initiative held a meeting in Yerevan, Armenia on 31st August 2006 under the chairmanship of the Acting Executive Secretary of SCPI and with the participation of the National Secretaries of the delegations of the parliaments of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia.

The Secretariat discussed and agreed various steps to be undertaken to realise the decisions of the 5th Plenary Assembly of SCPI that was held in London in July. The Secretariat agreed to launch a public consultation process on a proposal in front of the Plenary Assembly to establish Caucasus Day as an event to be marked annually throughout the region. It was agreed that the consultation process is to last until 15th November and NGOs, political forces, businesses and cultural organisations, as well as individuals can submit their views.

The Secretariat also took steps to start preparations for the next meetings of the Presidium and Plenary Assembly of SCPI, as well as the meetings of the working group on banking, environment and transport established by the 5th Plenary.

At the end of its session, the Secretariat of SCPI was received by the Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia, HE Mr Tigran Torosyan MP and the Head of the Armenian Delegation, and current President of SCPI, Mr Ararat Malkhazian MP, at the National Assembly building in Yerevan. The Speaker of the Armenian Parliament reiterated the importance of the SCPI process and thanked the secretariat for its endeavours.
