LINKS Monitors Georgian Presidential Election; Issues Statement

At a press conference held at the Marriott Hotel in Tbilisi LINKS issued a statement on the Presidential Elections held yesterday in Georgia. The statement said that these were unusual elections held in unusual circumstances. They open a new chapter in Georgia"s political history amid high hopes and expectations, especially amongst the younger generation of Georgians. The statement warns that these hopes can only be realized if democracy in Georgia is consolidated. The statement welcomed improvements noted in the electoral process but expressed serious concern on issues connected with the electoral register and the procedure adopted by the Central Election Commission for the registration of voters. The statement called on the new Georgian President to ensure that the ambiguities and inadequacies that characterized both the November Parliamentary Elections and the January Presidential elections will not be tolerated in the future.
