LINKS Monitors the 28th March Parliamentary Elections in Georgia; Issues Statement

LINKS deployed a ten person international team to monitor the 28th March Parliamentary elections in Georgia. The team was led by Former British Ambassador to Georgia and Head of the London Office of LINKS Stephen Nash, and included two former members of the Scottish Parliament Andrew Wilson and Duncan Hamilton, and Catherine Smith a Trustee of the John Smith Memorial Trust amongst others. The team was supported by a twenty person local technical support group. Apart from close monitoring of the political situation prior to election day the team deployed on Election day in different regions of Tbilisi, in Adjara, in Khvemo Kartli, Samskhe Javakheti and in Shida Kartli. In its statement read at a press conference at the Election Media Centre today LINKS welcomed the considerable improvements noticed in the conduct of the poll in comparison with previous elections but also noted continued serious problems particular with regards to the electoral register, and reported serious violations in Adjara, Khvemo Kartli and Samskhe Javakheti.
