Speaking at the Round Table Discussion on the theme “Georgia and Europe 2008”, LINKS Executive Director Dennis Sammut said that the Parliamentary Elections that will take place in Georgia on 21 May will define the future of the relations between Georgia and Europe.
“Given what has happened in this country in the last five years these elections do not need to be good. They need to be perfect. Anything less will be unacceptable to the Georgian people and to the wider community”. LINKS Executive Director said that the populations in the South Caucasus have bigger expectations from their leaders today than was the case a decade ago. That is why free elections are important because if the expectations are not met and there is no redress through the ballot box people will naturally search for other means. “The present Georgian government came to power in exactly these circumstances, so it is strange if they do not understand this“.
