LINKS Delegation in Armenia

A LINKS delegation is currently in Armenia where it is having meetings with government officials, political parties and civil society organisations. The delegation is composed of Executive Director, Dennis Sammut and the Rt Hon George Reid.

On Monday, 24 March, the delegation met officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia for a broad exchange of views on the current political situation in Armenia, the Karabakh conflict and conflict resolution process. The delegation has also had meeting with a number of NGOs and think tanks.

Speaking about the political situation in Armenia Dennis Sammut said: “These are testing times for the Armenian people. Given the events of the last weeks relations between Armenia and Europe are being put to their most difficult and challenging test since the country’s independence in 1991. Trust needs to be put back in the electoral process, Politicians of all persuasions must step back from the brink and a process of healing of the psychological and moral wounds opened by the events of 1st March needs to be initiated. This is a good time for Armenia to evaluate where it is going and there is a need for a national dialogue in which civil society must play a leading role”

The delegation  will today participate in a round table discussion on the theme “Armenia and Europe 2008”.
